Intro to Expressive Arts Meditation
This course identifies and expands on the intersections of insight oriented (Vipassana) meditation and expressive arts. Core principles of insight oriented meditation are the basis of the training and are combined with expressive and creative processes, with the intent of expanding understanding of how to utilize and apply them both for personal and professional purposes. Focus will be placed on the senses, the primary way of engaging with the environment and self, and one of the fundamental pathways to presence and awareness in meditation. Moving meditation, art-making, creative processes, mini group discussion, and writing will all be incorporated into the class work.
Day One: What is Mindfulness? Leaning into mindfulness and breath work
Day Two: Being present with what is; using body scans and RAIN to get curious
Day Three: What’s the story? Exploring mindfulness of mind & the storytelling mind
There will be 1-3 meditations per class session, so have a comfortable place to sit, comfortable clothes, and support items (blanket, bolster for legs, etc). Meditation practice times will vary from a few minutes to 15 minutes. A list of materials, suggested readings, and the zoom link will be provided once registration is complete. Students will have access to audio recordings of meditations outside of class.
Participants do not need previous art or meditation experience to attend. Keeping basic art materials for each day is recommended, including scissors, glue, colored pencils, oil or chalk pastels, different sizes of paper, and other materials that you may want to use.

"RE-membering" Who We Are
Research has shown that much of the suffering in the world arises from a sense of separation - from ourselves, from others, from our world. Screens, isolation, & busy-ness keep us from being able to be in connection with ourselves, which disconnects us from a sense of belonging. This class combines Insight Oriented meditation with art-making, sound-making, dyad discussion, group discussion, and writing to "Re-Member" who we are so that we can rekindle connection.
Day One: Connected vs. Disconnected – exploring what is there
Day Two: Leaning into the senses – creating the basis for exploration through our senses
Day Three: Re-Membering – body scan meditations focusing on rebuilding connection to self
Day Four: Cultivating belonging through connection to self – embodiment
All classes are through Zoom. Each class is 90 minutes long.
